Morristown, NJ – Join Morristown National Historical Park (NHP) for the festive Sing We All Merrily: A Colonial Christmas, presented by Linda Russell and Companie. The program begins at 7 pm on Thursday, December 12, 2019, and will occur in Morristown NHP's Washington’s Headquarters Museum, 30 Washington Place, Morristown, New Jersey.
Linda Russell and Companie's holiday concert will bring to life Christmases past. While Christmas was outlawed in 1659 by the New England Puritans, down in Jamestown, Virginia the Englishman John Smith noted a very merry celebration held by the settlers. Christmas in colonial times was kept – or not kept – according to one’s religious background and country of origin.
The joyous and heartfelt performance, Sing We All Merrily, will explore the traditions of the holiday in early America through English carols, American folk hymns, dance tunes and drinking songs. Quotes from diaries, poems, toasts and wassail recipes are interspersed with music played on hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, fiddle, cello and limberjack. A merry time will be had by all!
