Morristown, NJ – Morristown National Historical Park is about to begin work on a multimillion-dollar roadway improvement project in the park’s Jockey Hollow Area. The work will impact travel in the construction zones from April 11 through late August.The project will provide a safer, more enjoyable experience for the public and further encourage hiking and walking in Jockey Hollow through:
*Repaving several park roads and a parking area,
*Cleaning of culverts and drainpipes,
*Installing new park traffic control gates, road markings, and traffic control signage,
*Creating several traffic calming “tables” at pedestrian crossings and multiple “speed humps” to slow traffic and improve pedestrian visibility and safety.
Visitors to the park during this six-month project should expect road closures, traffic detours, trail closures, grooved pavement, and other construction impacts on the areas that are under construction.
Starting April 11, Phase I project work will begin on the Jockey Hollow Entrance Road (GPS 600 Tempe Wick Road Morristown, NJ) and include the Jockey Hollow Visitor Center parking lot. Both will be closed to traffic Monday through Thursday with this phase continuing through May 16. During that time, visitors can access the park from the Jockey Hollow Road Entrance (GPS 700 Jockey Hollow Road Morristown, NJ) via Western Avenue or Bailey Hollow Road to Western Avenue from US Route 202. - Phase I was completed in early May.
The entrance road and visitor center parking area are expected to be open Friday through Sunday and federal holidays for visitor use except on the occasional Friday when catch-up work is needed to be accomplished due to weather or other delays. Phase II of the roadway improvement project is currently underway and continues through late August. This work will focus on Cemetery and Sugarloaf Roads which will be closed to the public Monday through Thursday and open for visitor use Friday through Sunday.
A third phase of the project for road replacement work at the New Jersey Brigade / Cross Estate and Gardens unit has been funded and will commence about May 31 with road closures lasting until late August. The press release for that project is here.
Construction of trail and pedestrian crosswalks “raised speed tables and speed humps” will occur on several park roads that are not being repaved and spot construction work may occur outside of planned and publicized road closure dates. These areas will require short-term road closures and traffic detours while under construction. The public is asked to follow all road closures and detours and drive slowly and carefully through any construction zones.
Morristown National Historical Park encourages visitors to visit the park’s three other locations during the construction work: Washington’s Headquarters and Fort Nonsense in Morristown NJ and the New Jersey Brigade area located in Bernardsville, NJ.
