State Highway 410 remains closed between the Chinook Pass summit (milepost 69) and Hells Crossing (milepost 84) due to fire activity outside the park in the Norse Peak Wilderness. The section of Highway 410 in Mount Rainier National Park, including the Tipsoo Lake area is open.
Travelers can access the summit of Chinook Pass from the west. Vehicles traveling to Mount Rainier from the east will need to detour via US 12 across White Pass to SR 123. This detour adds about a half hour to the trip. The closure may extend through the weekend, depending on highway conditions and fire activity.
On Wednesday, August 16, 2017 the Norse Peak Fire grew to an estimated 1,000 acres. As the fire reached the highway it reversed direction and moved back upslope to the north. Today, fire crews are cutting hazard trees and preparing for additional suppression actions. Additional fire personnel are expected to arrive today and tomorrow. Updates on the fire can be found at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incid
