Manhattan Project National Historical Park Marks 80th Anniversary of VJ Day With Special Program in Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge, Tennessee: On August 14th, 1945, President Harry S. Truman addressed the nation, “I have received this afternoon a message from the Japanese Government…” Upon hearing the news of the end of World War II, thousands of Manhattan Project workers and their families filled Jackson Square.

Marking the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, the Oak Ridge, TN unit of Manhattan Project National Historical Park is offering a special guided tour of Jackson Square on Thursday August 14, 2025 from 12:30-1:00 PM EST. This program, VJ Day: The War’s End in Oak Ridge, explores the responses of civilian workers of the Manhattan Project and project leaders to the announcements of World War II’s end.

Please visit the park’s calendar for other upcoming programs. The park now offers programs weekly on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and most Saturdays.
