Equestrian Use Guidelines

Park trails are open for equestrian use during the non-winter months, in dry conditions. Most trails are suitable for horseback riding; however, please avoid taking your horse on the Precipice Trail and North Peak Trail.

Horse Trailer Parking:

• Horse trailers can be parked at the Prosper parking lot or the Billings Farm & Museum overflow lot.
• If you are bringing a carriage, please call ahead to make arrangements at 802-457-3368 x0, or email e-mail us.

General Considerations

Tethering

• When not in use, horses should be tethered.
• Horses that are nervous "diggers" or "pawers" should be hobbled when tied to prevent damage to the terrain.
• Tether horses at least 200 feet from streams or ponds.When not being used, horses should be tethered.

Hitches

• Always use hitch racks where provided.
• If there are no hitch racks, tie a rope between two trees (a "highline") away from the trail to avoid damaging the tree and trampling the root system.

Right-of-Way

• Hikers should stand quietly on the lower side of the trail and yield the right-of-way to stock.
• Stock users are encouraged to courteously educate hikers on proper meeting procedures, as many hikers may be unaware of this necessity.

Stay on Established Trails

• Please stick to established trails. Check with Park Rangers regarding any cross-country riding or riding on paved roads.

Manure

• As a courtesy to others and the park's resources, please scatter manure after long stops and smooth out any ruts or holes.
