Lassen Volcanic National Park Superintendent, Darlene M. Koontz, is pleased to announce that the park is beginning development of a Wilderness and Backcountry Stewardship Plan. “This plan will guide the management of Lassen Volcanic Wilderness and backcountry areas in order to preserve wilderness and backcountry character,” stated Koontz. The completed plan will cover a variety of topics, including, but not limited to: commercial services, climbing, trails, stock use, wilderness/backcountry permits, and visitor use.

Lassen Volcanic Wilderness was established by Congress on October 19, 1972. The majority of the park (79%) is designated or proposed wilderness and is administered to preserve wilderness character, as mandated by the Wilderness Act of 1964.

We invite you to join us in creating a long-term vision and plan for the wilderness and backcountry of Lassen Volcanic National Park.  What do you love about the park’s wilderness and backcountry? What concerns do you have? What activities in the wilderness and backcountry are most important to you?

We want to hear from you! The park will hold a series of open houses during the month of October:

  • October 9 – Chester, 5-7pm, Chester Fire Dept., 251 Airport Road
  • October 15– Red Bluff, 5-7pm, Tehama Country Visitor Center, 250 Antelope Blvd.
  • October 23 – Redding, 5-7pm, Lema Ranch, 800 Shasta View Drive
  • October 24 – Old Station, 5-7pm, location to be determined

In addition to the open houses, information related to the public scoping process will be distributed through mailings, the park website, social media, at the park, and at public events. Please visit the park website for more information about the plan and how to provide comments: https://www.nps.gov/lavo/parkmgmt/wsp.htm.
