MINERAL, CA –After a successful vehicle free day this past spring, Lassen Volcanic is happy to announce another opportunity for non-motorized recreation along the park highway. On Saturday, October 18, your park invites you to enjoy its fall colors and crisp air as you bicycle, walk, or run along the Lassen National Park Highway, vehicle-free."Lassen's first vehicle free day allowed visitors to enjoy the park highway in a quieter, slower way," said Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz. "We are thrilled to offer another opportunity for cyclists, runners, and walkers to enjoy this scenic highway without the presence of motorists."

The highway will be closed to motorized travel (except administrative and emergency vehicles) from 8:00am to 8:00pm. The road will be open to cyclists, runners, and walkers along the 30 mile stretch between the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center and the Loomis Museum Plaza. It is highly recommended that you complete your trek by sunset as the cool nights may create icy conditions on the road.

Before you begin your adventure, stop into the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center or the Loomis Ranger Station between9:00am to 5:00pmfor more detailed information. A site bulletin containing a map, distances, and altitudes at designated waysides is available online (http://bit.ly/LAVOVF2014).  

Come prepared for cool weather especially in the early morning and late evening. The Lassen National Park Highway is a high elevation road ranging from 5,850 to 8,500 feet and weather can change quickly. Check the weather forecast before your visit and come prepared for the conditions. It is recommended you wear layers and bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. Even on overcast days, sun exposure is greater at higher elevations. The vehicle free day may be postponed due to inclement weather.

The entrance fee into the park is $10 per vehicle or $5 per person ($10 per family) on a bicycle. Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center and Loomis Plaza.For further information, please visit the park's website at www.nps.gov/lavo or contact the park at [phone].
