Lassen Volcanic National Park Asks for Public Comment On Evaluation Report of Former Firing Range
Lassen Volcanic National Park is looking for public comment on an Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) that was prepared to consider alternatives for removal actions for the Former Firing Range (Site) used by Lassen Volcanic National Park in Shasta County, California under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liabilities Act (CERCLA). The Site, located on the Lassen National Forest, was operated under conditions of a Special Use Permit from 1974 to 2002. The Site has been closed since 2002 and has remained unused from that time.

Tourism to Lassen Volcanic National Park Creates $32.6 million in Economic Benefit
536,068 visitors to Lassen Volcanic National Park in 2016 spent $32.6 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 478 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $37.5 million.

2017 National Park Week
National Park Week is April 15 through 23, 2017. Entrance to all national parks is free during the weekends within the week. Park road crews have begun clearing snow from the park highway. The snowpack at Lake Helen measured 243.5" on April 1, making it the deepest snowpack in California.

Free entrance and Ski Celebration on 2/20
Lassen will host a free Ski Celebration at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center on Monday, February 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Entrance to the park is free in observance of Presidents' Day.

James Richardson Named Superintendent of Lassen Volcanic National Park
James "Jim" Richardson has been selected as superintendent of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Richardson is scheduled to report in mid-April. Martha Crusius will be the acting superintendent until then.

Sentence Given for Assault of a Federal Employee at Lassen Volcanic National Park
The sentencing hearing on January 24 for Nicholas M. Coberley resulted in 27 months in a State Prison and three years of supervised probation. Coverley pled guilty to charges stemming from an incident on a June night within Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Superintendent Steve Gibbons Retires
Lassen Volcanic National Park Superintendent Steve Gibbons announced he will retire on January 7 after a career spanning five decades, thirty-four years of National Park Service (NPS) experience, and twenty-eight parks.

Winter season has begun at Lassen. Ranger-led snowshoe programs begin 1/7. Annual Ski Celebration will be held 1/14. Free admissions dates for all NPS sites are now available.
