Contact: Darlene M. Koontz, 530-592-6102 Mineral, CA – Lassen Volcanic National Park entrance fees will be waived April 19 and 20 in celebration of National Park Week, coinciding with Earth Day. "This free entry will be in addition to the other scheduled fee-free days which include: National Park Service's 98th birthday on August 25, National Public Lands Day on September 27 and Veterans Day on November 11," said Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz. The fee-free dates do not include other fees for camping, reservations, or use of concessions. "Visitors can enjoy a spring visit during National Park Week at Lassen by hiking along some of the lower elevation trails or skiing and snowshoeing in the higher elevations," said Superintendent Koontz.
The 2014 spring highway opening has begun at Lassen Volcanic National Park. A ten-mile section of the scenic highway is open to the Devastated Area to vehicle traffic on the Manzanita Lake side of the park. "The road crews are also plowing from the south entrance and are making excellent progress. We anticipate opening the park highway through the park prior to the Memorial Day holiday weekend, but a spring storm could still delay that opening." Spring can still bring significant snowfall and the highway may be closed for short periods during lingering snowstorms. Although weather in the valley is mild, visitors should still prepare for winter conditions by dressing in layers, bringing sunglasses, sunscreen, extra water, food, as well as vehicle chains and blankets. Visitors need to stay clear of snowplows working in the park as equipment operators may be unable to see or hear them.
