Contact: Ben Hayes, 907-983-9206 Skagway - As part of the project to improve the Dyea Flats road, new road closure hours will go into effect the week of July 31. At the request of project contractor Hunz & Hunz Enterprises, the Slide Cemetery and Lost Lake road will be closed from 7pm to 7am daily, excluding holiday weekends. Closure of the Dyea Flats road from 11pm to 4pm remains in effect. Work to improve the Dyea Flats road began on May 9th and will continue through September 7th as part of a Federal Highways funded project to improve the National Park Service (NPS) owned portion of the road and the public access between the Slide Cemetery and the Lost Lake Trailhead. The project goal is to improve road surface drainage. Improvements will include elevating the road surface, increasing drainage, replacing culverts, and adding widened turn-outs for safe passing lanes. The public should be aware that survey crews will be working during the day, and there will be an active haul route with heavy truck traffic between Skagway and Dyea during the day. As always, please use caution while commuting between the two communities. During construction the Dyea Flats road will be closed except for emergency vehicles from 11pm to 4am and traffic will be flagger controlled one lane access from 7pm to 11pm and 4am to 7am with up to 30 minute delays. In addition, the Slide Cemetery Lost Lake road section will be closed 7pm to 7am daily. By performing construction activities only at night delays and impacts to park visitors and residents will be minimized. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this project. Klondike Gold Rush strives to maintain exceptional visitor and public services. Please feel free to contact the park with any comments or questions regarding the project. |
