The National Park Service Campground in Dyea has reopened to the public. The campground was closed on August 23, 2023, due to bear activity, property damage, and concerns over public safety.
Black bears (Ursus americanus) and brown bears (Ursus arctos) are still present in the area. Campground visitors and day-use visitors are urged to stay “Bear Aware.” This means continuing to store food and scented products properly, keeping pets leashed, and educating yourself on how to respond to potential close bear encounters. More information can be found at www.nps.gov/subjects/bears/safety.htm.
To report bear activity in or near the campground, or an incident involving a bear while in Dyea, please use the red Emergency Telephone located at the Dyea Ranger station near the entrance of the National Park Service Campground or dial 911. Non-emergent wildlife observations (including date, time, and location) can also be reported at the KLGO Park Visitor Center at 2nd and Broadway in Skagway, or by calling (907) 983-9200.
