Skagway – Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is preparing to move a 93-foot long steel truss bridge. The move will take place on Sunday May 8, 2022 and is anticipated to take one day. The bridge crosses a dynamic, unfordable, branch of the Taiya River at Mile 1.53 on the trail. The shoreline supporting the bridge is severely eroded on the west abutment. Park staff plan to move the bridge to a more established section of river, approximately 20-feet downstream from its current location. The work is expected to last 10 hours, from 7 am to 5 pm. The trail north of the construction will be closed during the bridge relocation. According to park Superintendent Angela Wetz “We are taking action to address a safety concern and ensure that visitors have a great experience while hiking the Chilkoot Trail.”Coupled with the bridge’s relocation, 15-feet of new trail will be constructed to connect the new bridge site with the existing trail. No further closures for this project are expected. – nps.gov/klgo –
