SKAGWAY, AK – The National Park Service (NPS) is requesting public input on the Chilkoot National Historic Trail Comprehensive Management Plan (CMP), which will provide a framework for managing and developing the trail over the next 20 years. Congress designated the Chilkoot Trail as a National Historic Trail under the National Trails System Act on December 29, 2022.The decision-making framework in the CMP will provide guidance to make management choices consistent with the resource protection and visitor experience expectations for which it was established.
The NPS will be accepting public input on development of the CMP from June 24 to July 24, 2024. The next steps will include the development of alternatives, an Environmental Assessment, and management decisions compliant with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and National Historical Preservation Act, followed by additional public comment.
The park will host an in-person public meeting to share information on the CMP. The meeting will consist of a presentation followed by an open house where informational displays will be available to review. Park staff will be available to discuss the project and answer questions.
