WASHINGTON — On July 18 and 19, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens will transform into an enchanted escape. No plane ticket required. For this one summer weekend, music, dance, art and family activities will carry visitors through a landscape inspired by Asian gardens and the living wetlands of the Anacostia River, where water lilies float like lanterns across quiet ponds and towering lotus blossoms rise in shades of pink, cream and green.

The National Park Service invites visitors of all ages to attend the free Lotus and Water Lily Festival on Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, 1550 Anacostia Ave. NE, Washington, DC 20019.

Each summer, the festival draws thousands of visitors to experience one of Washington, D.C.’s most striking natural displays: lotus and water lily ponds at peak bloom. This year’s festival features a Freedom 250 theme, with special red, white and blue blooms, honoring the nation's shared history, natural heritage and the cultural traditions that bring communities together.

Festival Experiences

Visitors can spend the day exploring programs that celebrate the flowers, the wetlands and the cultural traditions connected to lotus and water lily symbolism. Festival experiences include:

  • Cultural performances inspired by Asian, African, and Latin American traditions;
  • Music and dance that highlight the ways lotus and water lily symbolism travels across cultures;
  • Family games, arts and crafts, ecosystem activities and ranger-led learning;
  • Outdoor yoga, mindfulness, meditation, forest bathing and movement programs;
  • Art activities inspired by the flowers; and
  • Food and beverages available for purchase from vendors.

Program Highlights

Guided outdoor yoga offers a grounding way to stretch, breathe and connect with the garden setting. Forest bathing walks invite participants to slow down and experience the landscape through sound, texture, scent and quiet observation.

Afternoon and evening programs bring energy, movement and reflection to the gardens through strength and conditioning, mindfulness and meditation, dance and more vigorous yoga. Families can explore the garden ecosystem through educational activities, ranger programs, art, scavenger-hunt-style exploration and hands-on learning.

Throughout the weekend, cultural programs will celebrate the global meaning of lotuses and water lilies through dance performances, clothing, rhythm, movement and storytelling.

Plan Ahead for Heat

Visitors should prepare for hot summer weather. Areas around the ponds have limited shade and can get very hot. Bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen and a hat, and choose sturdy walking shoes. Pace yourself, take breaks and stay hydrated throughout the day.

Getting There

Parking is limited, and the park’s dedicated parking lot fills quickly on busy festival days. Visitors are strongly encouraged to use public transportation, bike to the festival or consider alternate parking options.

The closest Metro station is Deanwood Station. Visitors using Metro should use the Polk Street NE exit and follow the alternate walking route while the Douglas Street pedestrian bridge is under construction. The walk from Metro may take about 15 to 20 minutes.

Visitors can also bike to the festival along the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. Bike racks are available near the spur trail that leads from the paved Anacostia River Trail into the gardens. Bicycles are not permitted on the paths around the ponds.
