PATTEN, ME - Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument Superintendent Tim Hudson announced today that the National Park Service (NPS) will host a public meeting on January 24 to discuss winter use within the monument. The meeting is designed to help the NPS better understand the diversity of opportunities and concerns related to winter activities and to inform the development of a management plan for the newly created national monument.
“The public is invited and encouraged to be a part of the planning process,” said Superintendent Tim Hudson, “which will include this and future public meetings where people can provide insight regarding future management. A good management plan will reflect this input and aim to balance community and stakeholder interests.”

“Understanding the different winter activities at the monument is an important part of creating a management plan that will help the NPS provide a balanced variety of visitor experiences. Our team is excited to start meeting with folks to discuss the future of the monument,” said the planning team lead, Noel Musson. The NPS has committed to completing a management plan for the monument in three years and has brought on The Musson Group to facilitate the effort. In 2016 and 2017, the NPS completed a series of listening sessions and a workshop to hear from the public about the future management of the monument. Topics and discussion items from these listening sessions will shape the content of upcoming public meetings on the management plan. A draft management plan is expected by 2019.
