Public Invited to Open House on Future of Oasis Visitor Center

Joshua Tree National Park, in partnership with the City of Twentynine Palms, will conduct a design workshop October 20-22, 2008 to identify options and concepts for the future development of the Oasis Visitor Center located at the park’s headquarters in Twentynine Palms.

The workshop will be facilitated by project planners from the National Park Service’s Denver Service Center and by Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects. In conjunction with a design charrette (Charrette is a French word for an intensive, short-term planning process.), a public open house will be held to seek input and ideas from interested parties on the scope and direction of the Oasis Visitor Center redesign project.

The Open House session will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Open House will have the following agenda:

  • 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Development of Design Options
  • 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. — Presentation of Design Options with Public Feedback and Discussion

The Open House will be held at the Oasis Visitor Center located at 74485 National Park Drive, adjacent to the intersection of National Park Drive and Utah Trail.

The Oasis Visitor Center design workshop will address a variety of issues including present and future visitor use, visitor and employee parking, picnic and other public-use areas, restrooms, exhibit themes, auditorium and multi-purpose meeting space, education programming, community partnerships, collections storage and management, bookstore and other sales space, office and storage space, and the integration of current and future park operations identified for the headquarters area in the park’s current General Management Plan.
