Incident Commander John McDuffey announced that firefighters achieved full containment of the Keys Fire on Saturday at 6 p.m. Firefighters will continue to check for hotspots in the 110 acres that were burned. The fire began Thursday afternoon about 2:30 p.m. when lightning struck near Keys View, a busy park viewpoint, igniting trees and dry brush. Fire crews from the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, California Department of Forestry and San Bernardino County battled the blaze using ground crews, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft. As many as 140 firefighters were on the scene during the fire. McDuffey praised the efforts of personnel involved in the firefighting effort and said that crews are beginning the process of rehabilitating the area. Keys View is open but, because of safety issues connected with the fire, the burned area is closed to the public. All other park areas and facilities are open for normal visitor use |
