Guided Kayak Equipment Checklist

Are you planning a guided kayaking tour on Isle Royale? Learn what equipment is required for guided kayaking Commercial Use Authoization (CUA) holders to operate within the park.

 
 

All kayaking companies that hold a CUA must obtain and use the required equipment for safety and efficiency to operate guided tours along Lake Superior. All equipment must be well maintained and in good working condition.

 

Tandem Kayak Description

  • Must be considered sea kayak by standards
  • No sit on top kayaks
  • Kayaks with three bulk heads
    • Front, middle, back
  • Kayaks must have front and back hatches that are secured from opening while in large waves
  • Deck bungees must be present for ease of pulling kayak from emergency perspective or to store extra gear
  • Bow and stern carry handles must be present
  • Rudder must be available with foot pegs
  • Foot pegs must be available in both seating areas
  • Attached seats
  • Kayaks must be registered with the state of Michigan and have a MC number on side for commercial purposes

Guide/Single Kayak Description

  • Kayaks must have front and back hatches that are secured properly
  • Deck bungees must be present for ease of pulling kayak from emergency perspective or to store extra gear
  • Foot pegs must be available
  • Bow and stern carry handles must be present
  • Rudder must be available with foot pegs
  • Attached seats
  • Kayaks must be registered with the state of Michigan and have a MC number on side for commercial purposes
  • Example: Old Town Looksha 17
 

Equipment Provided by Guide

  • Guide specific PFD with pocket/zip up capability to hold safety equipment
  • Spray skirt with no tears that has capability to tighten around body
  • Marine radio
  • Satellite communication device, such as a satellite phone or emergency locator with texting capability
  • Bilge pump
  • First aid kit available when needed
  • Whistle
  • Throw and tow ropes
 

Equipment Provided by Guest

  • Functional and stable kayak paddle
  • USCG approved PFD that is adjustable and fitted to each person
  • Spray skirt with no tears that has capability to tighten around body
  • Guest may use their own PFD if it is USCG approved for the activity and stamped
  • Guest may use their own paddle
  • Whistle

    Commercial Use Authorizations

    Commerical use authorizations are required for any for-profit groups such as camps, outfitters, or tour groups.
