On Sunday, August 25, 2019 at 1 p.m., Homestead National Monument of America Artist-in-Residence Vickie MacMillan will present a public workshop in which participants create their own one foot by one foot barn quilt square at the Homestead Education Center.Participation will be limited thus registration is required to enroll in the barn quilt workshop. You can reserve your spot by calling Homestead National Monument at (402) 223-3514. Participants will be able to choose from six different barn quilt patterns and will have a variety of paint colors to choose from to make their design unique. Visitors are asked to bring a hair dryer from home to help speed the paint drying process along.
Vickie MacMillan will be in residence at Homestead National Monument of America from August 15 through August 28. Vickie lives in Washington State but she feels a strong connection to the State of Nebraska. Vickie has previously been Artist-in-Residence at the Starke Round Barn and a volunteer at the Willa Cather Museum in Red Cloud, Nebraska. Visitors are welcome to come and visit with her during her residency.
“We are excited to offer a fun hands-on art experience in which participants can make their own barn quilt square,” stated Superintendent Mark Engler. “It is an art form that truly connects with our homesteading past in a unique way.” Engler went on to say “past barn quilt workshops have always required participants to enroll, and the classes have always filled quickly, we urge those individuals or groups interested in being a part of this fun program to register sooner than later.”
The Friends of Homestead will be providing financial support for the barn quilt workshop.
