Salt Flat, Texas – Do you like exploring caves and rocks and learning about the elements that shaped them? Have you gone hiking with friends and family in a national park and discovered caves and karst landscapes? Has a hike past a disappearing stream or a sinkhole along a trail made you wonder, “What caused that?” Guadalupe Mountains National Park announces its annual youth poster contest with this year’s theme: “Holey Landscape: The World of Caves and Karst.”

This year, in partnership with the National Cave Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) in Carlsbad, New Mexico, we will be hosting several workshops and park events to provide opportunities for youth to learn more about caves and karst features. Check the park website at www.nps.gov/gumo to download a cave and karst education packet and for workshop and event dates.

Between October 2018 and April 30, 2019, young artists ages 6-18 can submit artwork to share their favorite cave or karst feature. The contest is free to enter. Participants can draw or paint their favorite memory of cave exploring, hiking to discover springs, disappearing streams or imagining what it would be like to encounter those features at Guadalupe Mountains National Park or other caves and karst parks. The memory does not have be at Guadalupe Mountains National Park, but we encourage you to come for a visit! To help plan your trip, visit our website at www.nps.gov/gumo. All poster submissions must be on at least an 8.5" x 11" poster board or paper and include the signed contest application. Suggested media includes crayons, pastels, acrylic paint, color pencils, markers, pen and ink, or tempera paint.

Entries can be hand delivered to the Pine Springs Visitor Center in the park, at Carlsbad Caverns National Park Headquarters in Carlsbad, New Mexico, or mailed to: Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Attn: 2019 Poster Contest - 400 Pine Canyon Drive, Salt Flat, Texas 79847.
