A major snowstorm with very high winds is forecasted for much of Colorado over the next 48 hours. Great Sand Dunes is under a winter storm warning from now until 12:00am on Thursday, September 10. The winter storm will include 8 to 15 inches of snow at the visitor center and campground and 13- 23 inches in the high country Tuesday night through Wednesday night. High winds and blizzard conditions are developing and have caused dead and living trees to topple in the Pinon Flats Campground, onto forested hiking trails and across the Medano Pass Primitive Road. Due to the extreme danger in the Pinon Flats Campground, the campground is closed until further notice for the safety of our visitors and staff. The current storm is also blowing sand off the tops of dune ridges. Visitors are advised to refrain from hiking in these conditions to avoid blowing sand, and limited visibility. Visitors are advised to take extreme caution when hiking in forested areas or driving along the Medano Pass Primitive Road to avoid hazardous falling trees and limited visibility.
Medano Pass Primitive Road may become blocked by downed trees, and park roads may become snow-drifted overnight before plows reach them each morning. Please call the visitor center at 719-378-6395 for the latest information.
