At 12:00 pm on June 27th, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve lifted the Stage 1 Fire Restrictions due to the recent moisture from the early monsoon season. Visitors are encouraged to practice fire safety when building campfires in the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve:

  • Keep fires small and manageable.

  • Never leave a fire unattended.

  • Extinguish fires completely with water.

Fires are allowed in the metal fire rings in the Pinon Flats Campground, and at Sand Creek backcountry campsite in Great Sand Dunes National ParkPat. Campfires in any other location in the national park besides campsites with metal fire rings are never allowed.  Fires are allowed in the metal fire rings in the 22 established campsites along the Medano Pass Primitive Road in the Great Sand Dunes National Preserve. In designated Wilderness in the Great Sand Dunes National Preserve, campfires are allowed in existing fire rings below the lowest limits of the krumholtz zone, or, where krumholtz does not exist, below timberline.
Park officials would also like to remind all visitors that fireworks are always illegal on ALL federally managed lands. Please leave them at home this July fourth holiday season. For more information, call the visitor center at 719-378-6395.
