On May 18, 2024, at approximately 12:00 am, Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim structure fire department and law enforcement rangers responded to a structure fire within a concessionaire housing area.Prior to the arrival of the fire department, an employee used a fire extinguisher to put out most of the fire thereby potentially saving the lives of other residents and several cabins surrounding the structure fire. The fire department’s further suppression efforts extinguished the fire completely.
Following the incident, an employee's vehicle was found severely damaged and connected to the suspected arsonist, a 21-year-old resident from Flagstaff. This individual, initially apprehended on DUI charges, now faces additional charges including arson, property damage, and trespassing.
The investigation into this incident involves the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch, Grand Canyon law enforcement rangers, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco, and Explosives.
For further updates on this matter, the public is encouraged to stay tuned to official park communications channels.
