Glen Canyon National Recreation Area’s Second Annual LeChee Chapter House Youth Program starts this summer. This program was born in 2022 after LeChee Chapter House representatives Jo Ann Yazzie-Pioche (Chapter President), and Renee Tsosie (Chapter Manager), met John Pflaumer, (National Park Service Education Specialist) at Page Attacks Trash meetings. A partnership was formed to develop and design a volunteer program to engage high school and college students from Le Chee in an in-depth exploration of careers and opportunities in the National Park Service. Students in the program gain experiences through speaking with National Park Service personnel about what they like most about their jobs and their most significant challenges. This experience can help students make informed decisions about their future careers.

According to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Superintendent Michelle Kerns, “This program can potentially build and strengthen our local community in ways we have only begun to imagine. Students can connect with the park in ways they may not have before, and this can help guide students to pursue a lifelong career.”

The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Chapter House Youth Program provides answers to the following questions: What careers can the National Park Service offer?  What skills and education are required?  Where and how do you apply?  Last year the LeChee Chapter House Program had nine participants and this year the partnership is hoping to have six. The program is  starting small but hopes to grow the program in the future.
