WEST GLACIER, MONT. – With great summer weather predicted for the weekend it will be a great time to come up and enjoy Glacier National Park. All of the campgrounds are open and some have been filling in the late afternoon, so plan to arrive early to secure a site. Most services in the park are open. Sun Tours and the Red Buses are operating with modified routes until the full opening of the Going-to-the-Sun Road anticipated on Wednesday, July 13. Until the full opening of the Going-to-the-Sun Road vehicles may travel to Avalanche Creek on the west side of the park or to Jackson Glacier Overlook, on the east side. Hikers and bikers may travel beyond the vehicle closure. From Avalanche Creek hikers and bikers can travel 11 miles to Bird Woman Falls Overlook. Some construction work is ongoing in that section so plan accordingly and be safe. On the east side of the park hikers and bikers may travel another two miles to Siyeh Bend. The park’s free shuttle system, along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, is in operation. On the east side of the park the shuttles travel between the St. Mary Visitor Center and Sun Point from 7am to 7pm. On the west side of the park shuttles operate between the Apgar Transit Center and The Loop from 7am to 5pm. Passengers must transfer to a different bus at Avalanche Creek to travel through the vehicle closure to The Loop. Returning crowds at The Loop have been large so you may wish to go early in the day and return before late afternoon. With the extremely heavy lingering snowpack and the hot daytime temperatures streams and creeks are running very high and fast. Visitors should always be cautious around water and remember that wet rocks are slippery. Drowning in streams is the leading cause of fatalities in Glacier National Park.
