As a  kick off the official Glacier National Park 100th anniversary commemoration, the Glacier Centennial Program will host a “Picnic in the Park”on Sunday, August 23 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on the lawns at Lake McDonald Lodge and Glacier Park Lodge in East Glacier.

As part of the festivities, the centennial program will unveil the full calendar of nearly 100 centennial activities. In addition, the National Park Service will offer free admission for all visitors to Glacier National Park on the day of the picnic. This fee free day for the picnic will be for one day only.

Glacier National Park popular musicians—Jack Gladstone and David Walburn—will be providing music at the family-style picnics, while Glacier National Park will provide various family activities, including Junior Ranger booklets, Leave No Trace games and a memory share board.

Picnic attendees can purchase picnic-style lunches and centennial products from Glacier Park, Inc. at either event location, or bring their own, thereby encouraging visitors to enjoy the park just as families have for the last 100 years. Cake will be provided for free at both locations by the Centennial Program.

”The park centennial planning effort is a model of collaboration, team work and shared vision by many people to reach a common goal.  Glacier’s staff and the many centennial program partners and volunteers all look forward to the next 18 months of activities that we hope will involve as many park friends and neighbors as possible.  We all want to share and enjoy Glacier’s centennial with all who cherish this special place,” stated Park Superintendent Chas Cartwright.

Glacier National Park is quickly approaching its 100th anniversary.  The park has empowered a team of volunteers to help plan and implement a community-based Centennial Program to take place throughout the latter half of 2009 and run through the celebration year of 2010.
