WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Glacier National Park officials announce the availability of an environmental assessment (EA) that analyzes the effects of providing a transit system terminal at the St. Mary Visitor Center in order to support the park’s new transit system scheduled to begin operation in July 2007. The EA is now available for public review and comment. Comments are due by April 13, 2007. Proposed actions discussed in this environmental assessment include changes to the interior of the visitor center; accessible restrooms; an addition to the visitor center to house an employee break room; construction of a dance arbor; bus stop; and expansion of the visitor center parking lot. When scoping was first announced on this EA in December 2005, alternatives to address the Divide Creek flooding issue were also envisioned. However, it was determined that significant additional analysis would be required to develop these alternatives. Therefore, the Divide Creek flooding issue is no longer addressed in this EA; it will be addressed in the future. Two alternatives are analyzed: 1) Alternative A (No Action) would result in no new construction or mitigation, and 2) Alternative B (Preferred) would involve the described proposed actions.
