Sun Road Preparations Wrapping Up

WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Glacier National Park officials have reviewed the progress made by the road crews from both the east and west side, and announced Thursday that the gate at Jackson Glacier Overlook will likely swing open to traffic sometime on Saturday. This means that visitors entering from St. Mary will be able to access Logan Pass. Specific scheduling of the gate opening is dependent on weather conditions and precipitation between now and Saturday, which could cause either a delay or a complete change in these plans.

Vehicle access will not yet be possible from the west side of the park, though. The west side access to Logan Pass will be delayed for several days due to construction that is taking place near the west tunnel, and additional clean up and preparation taking place along the road. The park anticipates that the construction zone will be passable and the western portion of the road will open to vehicular traffic later next week.

“We are proud of the work our crews have done once again in preparing the road for opening,” commented Mick Holm. “The spirit cooperation and teamwork they displayed in accomplishing this huge task is impressive, and a testimony to their concern and care for the road and the visiting public. I commend their efforts and thank them on behalf of all of us.” Holm added that the park always places the safety of the crews first when it comes to this difficult task, and they have responded in kind.

Logan Pass Visitor Center will not open this weekend, but restroom facilities will be provided at the Pass. Visitors are encouraged to call ahead to be sure of the latest status of the road before their visit.
