Weekend Roads Update for Glacier National Park

WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Visitors to Glacier National Park’s west side may continue to access the Going-to-the-Sun Road this weekend. Vehicles may travel as far as the Avalanche area. Road crews worked through the day on Friday to clear a debris-blocked culvert at the Lower Haystack/Logan Creek drainage. This weekend, there are no hiker/biker limits as no plowing activity will be taking place. Visitors should be aware that a slide blocks the roadway below Triple Arches. On the east side of the Sun Road, the vehicle gate remains at Jackson Glacier Overlook. During plowing operations, the east side hiker/biker closure is at No Stump Point. This weekend, there will be no hiker/biker closures on the east side.

Other park roads remain open except Cut Bank and the roads to Quarter Cirlce Bridge and Packer’s Roost. Visitor centers at Apgar and St. Mary are open daily. The campgrounds at Apgar and Sprague Creek are open with full services, and campgrounds at Bowman, Kintla, and St. Mary are open in primitive status.

It is important for visitors to remember that spring weather will impact continued plowing progress. Avalanches pose a danger to the plowing crew and either low avalanche danger or clear weather for spotter monitoring avalanche paths is necessary for plowing to continue.

Further, in addition to plowing, road crews must undertake additional work before the road can be opened. Among other efforts, this work includes installing guardrails, repairing potholes, culvert clearing and bridge repair, road sweeping, sign installation, and clearing of parking lots.

Visitors should always be alert for snowplows and other heavy equipment on park roads as well as areas of ice and/or slush, avalanche zones and/or fallen rock. Additionally, spring snowstorms can cause hazardous driving conditions and/or temporary road closures and set-backs in plowing progress.

Park visitors should also remember to keep alert for bears and other wildlife. Please report any bear or mountain lion activity or sighting to a park ranger.
