WEST GLACIER, MONT. – With warm weather forecast for this weekend, the following road and general park update is provided for park visitors, and includes information regarding the daily opening of the Apgar Visitor Center. Twenty-nine miles of the Going-to-the-Sun Road are open to vehicles. From the entrance in West Glacier, visitors can travel 15.5 miles to Avalanche, and from the St. Mary entrance, visitors can drive 13.5 miles to the Jackson Glacier Overlook. Additionally, visitors can now travel on the Camas Road, which was opened today.

The Two Medicine Road, the Many Glacier Road, the Apgar Lookout Road, and the Kelly Camp Road are also open. In the North Fork, vehicles can travel for seven miles and access the Big Prairie area. Visitors can hike/bike beyond the gate to Bowman or Kintla Lake. The park anticipates opening the Chief Mountain Road on May 1; however, the border will remain closed. Due to the weekend and road crew avalanche safety training early next week, no pioneering work will occur from April 29 through May 2. Therefore, no hiker/biker closures will be posted until at least May 3, and visitors can travel freely beyond the gate closures. All visitors are reminded to watch for avalanche slides, falling rocks, and debris. At all times, hikers and bikers are asked to adhere to posted signs along the roadway, and are reminded that pets are not permitted beyond gate closures.

For park and trip planning information, visitors can stop at the Apgar Visitor Center (AVC), which will be open daily, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., starting May 1. (The AVC is also open 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. this weekend.) The St. Mary Visitor Center will be open daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. starting May 14. A full range of ranger-led activities will begin June 25. Check the park’s Web site in late June for topics and times.

Visitors are reminded that new summer entrance fees begin on May 1. The fee for a seven day single vehicle entry is $25 and the fee is $12 for a single entrant (a biker, walker, or motorcyclist). An annual pass, valid for unlimited entry to Glacier for one year from the date of purchase, is $30. Even when the entrance stations are not staffed, an entrance fee is still required. Follow the posted instructions to pay the entrance fee at the self-payment boxes at each entrance station.

Camping is available in the Apgar picnic area for $15 per night; the Apgar Campground will open by May 5. Primitive camping (no potable water) is currently available at St. Mary Campground for $6 per night.
