WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Officials from Glacier National Park and the Glacier Natural History Association (GNHA) announce a postcard/bookmark contest for northwest Montana students in Grades 1-8. The winning artwork will be showcased on postcards and bookmarks this visitor season. Artwork must relate to the theme: What does Glacier National Park mean to me? Entries, including parental consent, must be postmarked by April 28, 2006.

Postcards/bookmarks will be given this summer to visitors making purchases at a GNHA sales area in the park. Entries will be judged in three different grade categories. First place winners in each category will receive a $25 GNHA gift certificate and second place entries in each category will receive a GNHA $15 gift certificate.

All entries will be judged on fulfillment of the guidelines, originality, neatness, grammar, spelling, use of color, accuracy to Glacier’s ecosystem, and clear evidence in the entry of the author’s knowledge of Glacier.

The winning entry for Grades 1-2 and for Grades 3-5 will be made into free GNHA postcards. The original drawing and text in both grade categories must fill an 8 ½” X 11” sheet of unlined, white paper, and be made with crayons or markers (no colored pencils). Text underneath the drawing must form a complete thought relating to the contest theme. For Grades 1-2, the text must be at least two sentences; for Grades 3-5, it must be at least one paragraph (five sentences).

The winning entry for Grades 6-8 will be made into free GNHA bookmarks. The original drawing and poem must fill an 8 ½” X 11” sheet of unlined, white paper and be made with ink or markers (no colored pencils). The drawing should portray a Glacier scene or animal/plant that the entrant has learned about and that relates to the contest theme. An original poem that clearly relates to the drawing needs to accompany the picture.

Each entry must consist of an original drawing and text. It must also include the entrant’s first name (only) and grade in school. A parental permission form must also be attached. A permission form is available online at https://www.nps.gov/glac/pdf/postcardbookmark.pdf. Or, on a separate paper, a parent may write his/her child’s name, school, grade, homeroom teacher, the parent’s address, and phone number. The parent must also provide a statement giving permission for the listed child to participate in the contest and include that the parent understands that: “All entries become the property of GNHA and may be used in advertising and sales promotions. Winners’ full names may be listed in the newspaper, but only their first name and grade will appear on the postcard/bookmark, or other items available to the public.” The parent must sign the paper.

Send artwork and parental permission slips postmarked by April 28, 2006 to: Wendy Hill, Student Contest, Glacier Natural History Association, P.O. Box 310, West Glacier, MT 59936.

GNHA operates the book sales areas in Glacier National Park visitor centers and ranger stations. Over a million people pass through the GNHA sales areas each season.
