FREDERICKSBURG, VA — From April 30-May 7, 2023, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park will commemorate the 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Chancellorsville with a series of interactive programs. View the full schedule on the Chancellorsville Anniversary page.
Highlights of this commemorative event include:
Virtual Talk: 1863: Year of Confederate Reckoning
Sunday, April 30, 2023, 7 pm, Register online
Join Dr. Stephanie McCurry for a virtual talk exploring the state of the Confederate national experiment in the spring of 1863. Dr. McCurry will discuss how disenfranchised people in the Confederacy – particularly enslaved people and white women – brought their political voices to bear on the war effort. How did instability within the Confederacy impact the evolution of the war itself? Could another military victory salvage the struggling nation?
Pop-up Tent: Chancellorsville in Memory
Monday-Wednesday, May 1-3, 2023
Join us in an informal setting to explore the place of Chancellorsville in history and memory at Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center.
Living History: All Day Programs at Fairview
Saturday, May 6, 2023, 10 am–8 pm
A full day of living history programming at Fairview, including horse-drawn artillery demonstrations, talks and informal conversations with living historians, and a Night on the Battlefield evening program. These programs are presented in partnership with living historians of the Liberty Rifles and First Section.
Salem Church Open House
Sunday May 7, 2023, 10 am-3 pm
Step inside Salem Church to explore the history of this special place. Discuss the fighting that took place there, the civilian experience, the care of casualties, and the burial of the dead in the aftermath of battle.
Battlefield Talks and Walks
Monday-Wednesday, May 1-3, 2023 & Friday-Sunday, May 5-7, 2023
Join park rangers for a variety of programs around the battlefield that explore the history of Chancellorsville from places where the battle occurred 160 years ago.
All programs are free and open to the public. For outdoor programs and battlefield walks, visitors are encouraged to be prepared with good shoes, water, sunscreen, and bug spray.
