Fredericksburg, VA: Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park will once again combine health and history with a series of “Fit-History” hikes this spring. These Ranger-led hikes are designed to cover a lot of ground—through woods and fields both beautiful and historic. The hikes seek a pace of about 2 miles per hour, including occasional brief stops along the way. These hikes turn our more traditional tours on their heads: rather than 80% talking and 20% walking, these hikes are on the move 80% of the time, with 20% of the time devoted to stops. All hikes begin at 10 a.m. and will last 2-3 hours.
March 28: Stafford Heights and the Port of Falmouth (4 miles)
Join us on a hike that includes the newest section of the Chatham Bike Trail (with new access to the upper pontoon crossing site) and a trek across Stafford Heights to the waterfront at the historic Port of Falmouth. Led by John Hennessy. Gather at historic Chatham, 120 Chatham Lane, 22405.
April 11: A Walk in the Wilderness (4 miles)
Explore the most distinctive landscape in the park: The Wilderness. Ranger Mary O’Neill will explore the natural processes and human activities that made the Wilderness the most daunting of all places to fight a battle. Meet at the picnic area on Hill-Ewell Drive, near Wilderness Run. (GPS Coordinates: 38.310900, -77.750900)
April 25: Fredericksburg: Prospect Hill to Lansdowne (4.2 miles), with optional side trip to Bernard’s Cabins (5.2 miles)
Join Ranger Hilary Grabowska for a hike into the beautiful woods on the south end of the Fredericksburg Battlefield, with an optional one-mile side-trip out to the site of the living quarters for enslaved people who once worked Mannsfield Plantation. Meet at Prospect Hill, Tour Stop #6 on the Fredericksburg Battlefield. (GPS Coordinates: 38.248090, -77.435651)
May 9: Spotsylvania: Homeplaces (4.1 miles)
This 4.1-mile trek will carry across one of the nation’s most compelling landscapes to the home sites of those who lived there during the Civil War, from the Landram house (largely dismantled to build earthworks) to the Spindle house (consumed by fire mid-battle). Led by John Hennessy. Meet at the Bloody Angle, Tour Stop #3, Spotsylvania Court House Battlefield. (GPS Coordinates: 38.223558, -77.601730)
Please wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water, and pack a snack. Bug spray and long pants are also suggested. All hikes follow trails or roadsides, but terrain is rolling, though generally not difficult.
