NPS Offers Free Programs in June

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Superintendent John J. Donahue announced today that the National Park Service is hosting several programs and events throughout the summer as part of NPS Centennial anniversary celebration. A full schedule of events is available on the park’s website at www.nps.gov/dewa.

Special programs for the month of June are listed below.

Dingmans After Dark: Lantern Stroll
June 3 and June 17, 8:30 pm- 9:30 pm
Dingmans Falls Visitor Center

Experience the Dingmans ravine and waterfalls by the soft glow of lantern light. Take a step back in time, and experience an old favorite, in a fun way. Space is limited, so call (570) 269-8307 to reserve a lantern.

100 Year Hikes / National Trails Day
June 4
Come explore the park on National Trails Day. The following hikes will be offered.

9:00 am-12:00 pm
Raymondskill Trailhead
Raymondskill and Cliff Park trails. Difficulty/Distance: Raymondskill Falls Trail: Moderate to difficult approximately .3 miles/ Cliff Park Trail: Easy to moderate hike approximately 3 miles.

1:00 pm-3:00 pm
Walpack Center Church Parking Lot
Walpack Ridge and Military Road Trails Distance/Difficulty: Walpack Ridge Trail: Moderate hike approximately 3 miles/ Military Road Trail: Moderate hike approximately 1 mile.

6:00 pm-8:00 pm
AMC Mohican Outdoor Center
Distance/Difficulty: Moderate hike of 3.5 miles along Rattlesnake Swamp to Catfish Fire Tower along the Appalachian Trail.

Dingmans After Dark: Night Hike 
June 10 and June 24, 8:30 pm-9:30 pm 
Dingmans Falls Visitor Center 
Take your senses on a journey while exploring a park favorite, in a new and exciting way. Hike the Dingmans ravine in a way few get to experience, using multiple senses to Find Your Park in a family friendly way. 

Marie Zimmermann Open House 
June 18, 2016, 10:00 am-2:00 pm 
Marie Zimmermann House 
Tour the artist’s country estate with its impressive and unique stone work and learn more about the artist Marie Zimmermann and her contribution to American art history. 

Centennial Father’s Day Photography Workshop 
June 19, 2016, 10:00 am-12:30 pm
Millbrook Village 
Families are invited to sharpen their photography skills, while touring historic Millbrook Village. Topics discussed will include photographing buildings, as well as portrait and macro photography. Please bring your own camera, and a sense of adventure. A tripod is recommended, but not required. All skill levels are welcome. 

Full Moon Hike to Lookout Rock 
June 20, 2016, 9:00 pm-11:00 pm 
Lake Lenape Trailhead 
Join a park ranger for a moderate moonlight hike to Lookout Rock along the Appalachian Trail on Mt. Minsi. The hike will be approximately 3 miles. Participants should bring water, insect repellent, and sturdy shoes.

An Old Fashioned Independence Day Celebration 
June 25, 2016, 10:00 am-2:00 pm 
Millbrook Village 
Grab your bonnet or finest hat, and come celebrate Independence Day the way it was done in a small rural 19th century community. This family friendly event includes hands-on activities, crafts, demonstrations, and even a watermelon eating contest. 

Summer Lecture Series 
June 25, 2016, 7:00 pm-8:00 pm 
Bushkill Meeting Center 
Biologist/Zoologist Bill Streeter will discuss raptors native to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
