Superintendent John J. Donahue announced today that the National Park Service is hosting several programs and events throughout the summer as part of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area's 50th Anniversary celebration. A full schedule of events is available on the park's website at www.nps.gov/dewa. Special programs for the month of June are listed below. "These events are a perfect way to kick off the summer season and provide some new and exciting opportunities for visitors to enjoy the park and all it has to offer," said Superintendent John J. Donahue. All programs are free and open to the public. National Trails Day Hike: Hialeah to Smithfield Beach Join a ranger and celebrate National Trails Day with a guided hike on the McDade Trail from Hialeah Picnic Area to Smithfield Beach. Meet at 9:30 am at the picnic area. The hike is 2 miles one-way. Participants may hike back with the ranger or choose to pay a $1 walk-in fee and stay at Smithfield Beach to recreate. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and insect repellent. National Get Outdoors Day Hike: Rattlesnake Swamp Hike Celebrate National Get Outdoors Day by hiking the Rattlesnake Swamp Trail with a park ranger. Meet at the main office of the Mohican Outdoor Center for this moderate to easy, 4 mile hike along the Kittatinny Ridge. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and bring water, sunscreen, snacks, and insect repellent. Citizen Science Fishing Contest Join us for our Citizen Science Project at Blue Mountain Lakes on the NJ side of the park. This free event will take place from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Participants will help collect fish for a study of mercury contamination being conducted bythe National Park Service and United States Geological Survey in eastern National Parks. The goal is to collect several samples and sizes of largemouth bass, yellow perch, and bluegill or pumpkinseed sunfish. Information about this study and fish and fishing in the park will be available. Park rangers and biologists will also be on hand to answer your questions and talk about the study. No fishing license is required because this is a "Free Freshwater Fishing Day" in New Jersey so all are invited to participate. Pre-registration is requested; call 570-426-2430 by Thursday, June 11, 2015. Nature Photography Workshop Learn tips and tricks for getting the most out of your photography while uncovering the beauty of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Participant should bring their own cameras along with water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Some hiking may be involved depending on participants' comfort level. Step back in time as you hike the Dingmans Falls trail by the soft glow of lantern-light. Space is limited; call 570-426-2430 by June 17 to reserve a lantern. Zimmermann Open House Tour the home and learn more about the artist Marie Zimmermann and her country estate in the park.
