Donahue is pleased to announce a series of programs and events that will be presented during the month of August. “The National Park Service is offering special evening programs, a family day, astronomy programs, historic house tours, and a nature photography workshop this month as part of our fiftieth anniversary celebration,” said Donahue. “All of the programs are free and open to the public and are a great way to experience and learn about one of the most-visited units of the national park system.” Programs and special events in August include:
Family Fun Day
When: August 9, 2015 from 10 am to 12 pm
Where: Toms Creek Picnic Area
Families with children of all ages are invited to join us for Family Fun Day. Park Rangers will lead a variety of hands-on activities to help families get up close and personal with nature. Participants should bring water, sunscreen, and insect repellent and wear sturdy shoes. For more information call: (570) 426-2417.
Nature Photography Workshop
When: August 9, 2015 from 4 pm to 7 pm
Where: Pocono Environmental Education Center
Learn tips and trick for getting the most out of your photography while uncovering the beauty of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Participant should bring their own cameras along with water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Some hiking may be involved depending on participants’ comfort level. When: August 12, 2015 from 8:30 pm to 11 pm
Where: Milford Beach
Come and watch the skies during the Perseid Meteor Shower. During the event, park rangers will be on hand to lead astronomy activities and answer questions. Bring blankets or chairs. For more information call Dingmans Falls Visitor Center at (570)828-6125 Dingmans After Dark: Lantern Stroll
When: August 14, 2015, 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Where: Dingmans Falls Visitor Center
Step back in time as you experience the Dingmans ravine and waterfalls by the soft-glow of lantern light. A limited number of lanterns are available by reservation only. Call (570) 426-2430 to reserve one. If you have your own lantern with an adjustable dimmer you are welcome to join us. Flashlights and other bright lights are not permitted on the tour. Dingmans After Dark: Night Sky Program
When: August 7 & 21, 8:30 pm to 10 pm
Where: Dingmans Falls Visitor Center
Learn about our place in space as you discover the night sky over Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. A 30-minute indoor presentation will be followed by stargazing with the naked-eye and telescopes. For more information call Dingmans Falls Visitor center at (570) 828-6125.
Dingmans After Dark: Night Hike
When: August 28 from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Where: Dingmans Falls Visitor Center
Join a ranger for a walk along Dingmans Creek while using all five senses to experience the park in a new way. For more information call Dingmans Falls Visitor center at (570) 828-6125.
Marie Zimmerman Open House
When: Every Saturday and Sunday, 10 am to 2 pm
Where: Marie Zimmermann House
The Marie Zimmermann House will be open for public viewing every Saturday and Sunday throughout August. In 1944, Marie Zimmermann (1879 - 1972) closed her National Arts Club Studio and moved away from the New York art scene to her family's vacation home which now is part of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. During the open house, tour the home and learn more about the artist and her country estate in the park. The house can be accessed by taking the south entrance of Zimmermann Farm Road, located at mile 15 off Route 209 in the park.
