Tribal Liason


American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) and through the Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program, is seeking a Tribal Liaison Assistant to assist in updating NPS interpretation and educational programming and supporting Tribal partnerships at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.


Position overview:

  • Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area has existing relationships with the Delaware Tribe, the Delaware Nation, the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, and the Shawnee Tribe. The Tribal Liaison Assistant would review current Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area interpretive and educational materials on Tribal history.

  • The Tribal Liaison Assistant would also observe government-to-government consultations with Tribal members and staff and may communicate directly with indigenous community members, federal agencies, and other partners about project needs and priorities.

  • The Tribal Liaison Assistant will develop a draft presentation to the park management team and NPS regional staff that summarizes the results of their work.

  • The Tribal Liaison Assistant will be supervised by the park Cultural Resources Program Manager. Once the member has a full grasp of the project, an outline will be generated by the member with project goals and deadlines.

  • The Tribal Liaison Assistant will have an opportunity to develop oral and written skills and enhance their research skills.

Traditional Trades Advancement Program

Created through a unique partnership between the National Park Service and Groundwork USA, the Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) is a 26-week, 1040-hour, paid internship program. In the program, participants will have the opportunity to learn from construction and preservation experts, develop the skills to enter the industry, and work in and preserve historic structures in a National Park.

Education Provided:

  • How to preserve and restore historic buildings and structures
  • Woodworking, painting, masonry, glazing, etc. depending on the needs of the park
  • How to operate hand and power tools
  • Material handling and project management
  • Construction drawing and construction math
  • Construction industry standards and procedures
  • Historic Preservation Fundamentals Training
  • OSHA Safety Training (OSHA-10 certification)

Responsibilities will include:

  • Masonry and carpentry techniques to preserve at-risk components of the historic built environment.

  • Carpentry skills learned may include simple timber-framing, design, and layout.
  • Partnering with over park divisions to learn about the varied work and responsibilities of operating an NPS unit.
