Curecanti Prepares for Summer Boating Season and Reminds Visitors to Plan Ahead

GUNNISON, Colo. — Curecanti National Recreation Area is preparing to welcome visitors to the water for the summer boating season. With reservoir levels expected to change throughout the summer, boaters are encouraged to plan ahead and be aware of changing conditions for a safe and enjoyable visit. 

Blue Mesa Boat Ramp Operations 

Boat ramps are scheduled to open on a rolling schedule based on water levels and safe access. The following opening dates and ramp assessments are currently anticipated but are subject to change: 

• April 26, 2026: Lake Fork ramp opens. Elk Creek and Lake Fork ramps will be open daily, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

• May 15, 2026: Park staff will assess Iola Boat Ramp for potential opening based on conditions. 

• May 22, 2026: Elk Creek and Lake Fork will extend hours to 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. If conditions allow, Iola opens 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

• June 1, 2026: Park staff will assess reservoir elevation and trends, and operations may be adjusted to maintain visitor safety and protect infrastructure. 

Because water levels can change quickly, some ramps may have temporary closures or reduced access. Visitors should check the park’s website throughout the season for the latest updates: www.nps.gov/cure/planyourvisit/reservoir_levels. 

Watercraft Inspections for Aquatic Invasive Species 

To prevent the introduction of damaging aquatic invasive species into Blue Mesa Reservoir and other Aspinall Unit reservoirs, all motorized and trailered vessels must complete an aquatic invasive species inspection before launching. Inspections are available free-of-charge at all open ramps.  

Non-motorized and hand-trailered watercraft launching in Morrow Point and Crystal Reservoirs may be launched without an inspection if your watercraft is registered in Colorado, has not been in out-of-state- waters within the last 30 days, and has not been in infested waters.

Staying Safe on the Water 

Boaters should be prepared for changing conditions on all three reservoirs. Lower water levels can expose rocks, shore hazards, or shallow areas that may not have been visible in previous years. Visitors are encouraged to: 

• Wear a life jacket at all times. 

• Operate at safe speeds and keep a close lookout for hazards. 

• Avoid boating after dark. 

• Be prepared for cold water temperatures, even in summer.
