Fall Operations at Craters of the Moon

ARCO, ID, Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve has started its fall season operations. The Robert Limbert Visitor Center and Natural History Association Bookstore are open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Park films are available on request.

Campground: The 42-site Lava Flow Campground is open on a first-come, first-served basis. The water is currently turned on. As soon as temperatures dip below freezing at night, the water will be turned off until next year.

Caves: The lava tube caves Indian Tunnel and Dew Drop are open. To protect bats from white-nose syndrome, free cave permits are required. Obtain your permit at the visitor center during operating hours.

September Star Party: Join park rangers and volunteer astronomers from the Idaho Falls Astronomical Society on September 15th to 16th from 8:30 pm to 11 pm to tour the stars. This free program takes place in the Caves Area parking lot. Bring warm clothing, water, a chair, and a red flashlight. Camping is only available at the Lava Flow campground.

National Public Lands Day Photography Workshop: On September 23rd at 12:30 pm to 4 pm, join retired park ranger, Doug Owen, for a free nature and wildlife photography workshop. The course is offered by the Natural History Association in partnership with the park in celebration of National Public Lands Day. Learn different photography methods and naturalist skill- methods to take your outdoor photography to a higher level. Registration is required and limited to 30 people. Please call 208-527-1335 to make a reservation.  Course will be held in the visitor center.

Programs: Ranger talks at 2 pm and evening programs at 9:30 pm will occur on Fridays and Saturdays until September 9th. Find out about all park events at:  https://www.nps.gov/crmo/planyourvisit/calendar.htm
