Each year the C&O Canal National Historical Park offers a variety of park ranger programs and visitor activities throughout the park. Please review the following information for a summary of activities and programs by park location.

Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center

  • Meet the Mules

    Meet the hardworking mules that help operate boat demonstrations. Offered spring, summer and fall months only.

  • Walking Tours

    Join park rangers for a walking tour of the Great Falls area and learn about the history and natural environment of this special place. Participants should bring water to drink and wear comfortable shoes last approximately 60 to 90 minutes. . The lock demonstration occurs at 2:30 PM; both walking tour and lock demonstration meet at the Great Falls Tavern.

  • Lock Demonstrations

    In 2019, see how canal boats were lifted and lowered through locks along the canal.
  • Rileys Lockhouse Tours

    Explore the life of a lock-keeper with a guided tour of one of the C&O Canal's original lockhouses. Open most weekends in the spring and fall. More information contact the program coordinator 301-384-8584.

Williamsport Visitor Center

Contact the visitor center for additional information on park ranger programs.

  • Boat Programs

    Ride with park rangers from the Cushwa Basin to Lockhouse 44 and back and learn about life on the canal.

  • Lockhouse 44 Tours

    Explore what life in the 1800s would have been like.
