Sulphur, Okla.– New fire restrictions are now in effect at Chickasaw National Recreation Area due to prolonged drought and dry vegetation. Wood fires, including campfires, are prohibited until further notice.
Charcoal within a grill and stoves fueled by petroleum or Liquid Propane Gas (LPG) fuels are allowed. Possessing or using any kind of fireworks or other pyrotechnic devices is prohibited at all times on all federal public lands.
“Even though we had rain last week,” says Superintendent Bill Wright, “we are still deep in a drought. We’ve had several small fires start from sparks coming off of wood fires. For right now, it’s for the best to prohibit those kinds of fires until conditions improve.”
