Celebrate National Earth Science Week at Capitol Reef National Park

Earth Science Week will be held October 14-20, 2018 and will celebrate the theme "Earth as Inspiration." The year's event will emphasize artistic expression as a unique, powerful opportunity for geoscience education and understanding in the 21st century. Capitol Reef National Park was created to preserve and protect a rich geologic story and is a great place to learn more about the Earth.

All week
10:00 am             Daily Geology Talk. Learn about Capitol Reef’s geologic history. Located at the visitor center. 30 minutes.

Wednesday, October 17:
9:00 am               Fossil Hike. Learn about paleontological resources. Meets at the Sulphur Creek Route trailhead. Moderately strenuous hike. Approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) on uneven terrain. 90 minutes.
2:00 pm               Fossil Talk. Meets at the Ripple Rock Nature Center. ¾ of a mile (1.2 km) south of the visitor center on Scenic Drive. 45 minutes.

Thursday, October 18:
7:30 pm               Evening Illustrated Program on Fossils. Discover the paleontological and geological resources of the park. Located at the campground amphitheater. Plan on cold temperatures, dress warmly. One hour.

Friday, October 19:
9:30 am               Geology Hike. Hike the moderately difficult Fremont Gorge Overlook trail part-way on uneven terrain and learn about the geology of the park. Meets by the blacksmith shop, across the street from the Ripple Rock Nature Center. 90 minutes.

Saturday, October 20:
1:00-5:00 pm       Ripple Rock Nature Center will be open with activities for children of all ages. Located ¾ mile (1.2 km) south of the visitor center on Scenic Drive.
5:15 pm               Junior Geologist Program. Kids can earn a special patch by participating in this program to learn about Geology. 30 minutes. Located ¾ mile (1.2 km) south of the visitor center on Scenic Drive.
