Making CampCamp Nelson National Monument features a Visitor Center, Museum, and Reconstructed Barracks! Visitors can learn more about Camp Nelson's national significance by watching the 17-minute film, exploring the new exhibits recently designed and installed in Visitor Center and Reconstructe Barracks, completing the Junior Ranger booklets, including the Underground Railraod Networkt to Freedom, and purcashing a keepsake in our book store! You can engage with park learn to learn more about the trail system, special events and programs, and explore the grounds on a guided tour. The buildings are currently open 7-days a week 9:00 am to 5:00 pm starting on Memorial Day through Sunday, September 8, 2024. The buildings will be closed on September 9th and 10th and reopen for 5-day a week operations on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. The grounds, including all trails, are open 7-days a week, sunrise to sunset. The Perry "White" House remains closed due to ongoing renovations. Reconstructed BarracksAfter exploring the Visitor and Museum, check out the Reconstructed Barracks building next door. The Soldiers' Exhibit features individual biographies of soldiers and civilians who experienced Camp Nelson during the Civil War. Each biography features a historic image, personal items, and uniform/clothing. The Barracks also features the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom exhibit which features interpretive panels detailing the service and sacrifice of African American soldiers, refugees, and other freedom seekers, including thousands who made the hazardous and harrowing journey to Camp Nelson and other US Army bases in Kentucky. The National Park Service (NPS) is currently designing a new interactive exhibit featuring a touchscreen and display monitors that will be installed in the Barracks in 2025!
