Camp Nelson National Monument announces the 2nd Annual Freedom Day Festival on June 20 to commemorate the anniversary of an historic event in 1865. That year, thousands of soldiers and civilian refugees at Camp Nelson organized a grand July 4 celebration with music, food, games, and military demonstrations. Planned in late June 1865, the original celebration now inspires today’s festival, which serves as an enticing invitation for visitors to discover the lesser-known history of Camp Nelson.
