MANTEO, N.C. — A 46-year-old male from Falls Church, Virginia died in an apparent drowning at the south end of Hatteras Island last evening.

Additional details:

  • At 9:34 p.m. May 28, a Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) visitor reported finding a body floating in ocean water at the end of Pole Road, located at the south end of Hatteras Island.

  • Two Seashore Rangers, Dare County Emergency Medical Services and Hatteras Island Rescue Squad responded to the incident.

  • Family members of the 46-year-old male from Falls Church, Virginia stated that he was surf fishing prior to the water-related incident.

  • Ocean conditions in the area were reported to be rough.
