As of 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 4, 2010, all areas in the national park units of the Outer Banks Group have been assessed for possible storm damage. National Park Service staff completed on-the-ground assessments of the status of facilities and beaches to determine when normal operations can be restored. Ocracoke Visitor Center and Ocracoke Campground will open at 12:00 noon, Saturday, September 4; the Ocracoke Campground reservation system has been reactivated. Silver Lake boat docks have reopened. The soundside boat ramp will remain closed. The Ocracoke Airstrip opened at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, September 4. Currently, Ramps 67, 68, and 70 are open for ORV and pedestrian access. Ramp 72 (South Point Road) remains closed due to flooding. The Hatteras Visitor Center and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will open at 9:00 a.m., Sunday, September 5. Frisco Campground will open at 8:00 a.m., Sunday, September 5; Cape Point Campground is closed for the season due to flooding. The Billy Mitchell Airstrip is open. Currently, Ramps 23, 34, 38, 43, 49, and 55 are open for ORV and pedestrian access. Bodie Island Visitor Center will open at 12:00 noon, Saturday, September 4. Oregon Inlet Campground will open at 12:00 noon, Saturday, September 4. Currently, Ramp 4 is open for ORV and pedestrian access. Wright Brothers National Memorial Visitor Center will open by 12:00 noon, Saturday, September 4. Fort Raleigh National Historic Site Visitor Center will remain closed. NPS lifeguarded beaches are closed for the season. Due to high surf conditions and rip currents, swimming is not advised. |
