National Park Service Spring Program Schedule Announced

Learn more about your National Parks while visiting the Outer Banks this spring!

Beginning May 7, the National Park Service Outer Banks Group will be providing scheduled public programs at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Wright Brothers National Memorial and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. The spring program schedule will run through June 9.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore will offer a variety of programs that focus on the islands’ natural and cultural history. All programs run approximately 30 minutes. Lighthouse History talks can be heard at the Bodie Island Visitor Center each Saturday at 3 p.m. and at the Hatteras Island Visitor Center each Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Barrier Island Nature, a talk or short walk exploring the plants, animals or shifting sands of the Outer Banks is offered at the Bodie Island Visitor Center on Sundays at 3 p.m., at the Hatteras Island Visitor Center on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. and at the Ocracoke Island Visitor Center on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. Learn about storms and shipwrecks at Graveyard of the Atlantic each Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Ocracoke Island Visitor Center. Children are invited to join a ranger for Especially for Kids each Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Hatteras Island Visitor Center where they can enjoy fun, educational activities. Additionally, children can earn a Junior Seashore Ranger badge by completing activities in a booklet available at every Seashore visitor center, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Learn about the Wright brothers, their flight experimentation and success at the Wright Brothers National Memorial Flight Room Talk (30 minutes) each weekday at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The movie, Kitty Hawk – The Wright Brothers Journey of Invention (30 minutes), will be shown daily at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, Flight Room Talk is offered at 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Kite Flight, a kids’ kite-building and flying program, will be offered at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Children can earn aJunior Flight Ranger patch – just ask for a booklet at the Visitor Center, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

The Lost Colony: 1587, a 30-minute examination of the theories of the fate of the Lost Colony, will be presented at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday at 11 a.m. as staff is available. Roanoke – the Lost Colony, a17-minute movie is shown every ½ hour daily. Children are invited to participate in the Junior Roanoke Ranger program, offered every day. Check at the Visitor Center for a workbook to earn a patch, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

A full range of summer talks, walks and activities will be offered throughout the National Park Service Outer Banks Group sites from June 10 through Labor Day. The summer program schedule is currently listed on park websites: Cape Hatteras National Seashore,
