MANTEO, N.C. — As a result of feedback received from the public during a two-week-long comment period, including residents that live on Flowers Ridge Road in Buxton, Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) has decided not to pave the 400-foot-long section of the road that leads into the private neighborhood.
The Seashore requested funding for the road paving project years ago as a result of resident concerns related to maintaining the gravel driving surface on Flowers Ridge Road. While the proposed project would reduce routine maintenance and provide for smoother transportation, residents in the area shared thoughtful concerns related to public safety, an increased likelihood of speeding, and potential confusion if Seashore visitors see the paved surface and believe that it leads to Seashore facilities or visitor areas.
“The Seashore appreciates the efforts that the local community made to provide input on this proposed project,” stated Superintendent David Hallac. “The comments and concerns that we received assisted us with making a decision about the future of this section of roadway.”
The Seashore will continue to communicate with adjacent landowners and periodically grade the gravel end of Flower's Ridge Road.
