Local Volunteer Fire Departments Assist Cape Hatteras National Seashore Rangers to Control Wildfire

At 4:26 this afternoon, a wildfire was reported at Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) in Frisco, N.C. The fire was estimated to be more than five acres in size and burning in the back-dune vegetation approximately 1/8 mile north of Ramp 48 between the Inside Road and beachfront.

Seashore Rangers responded with support from the Buxton and Frisco Volunteer Fire Departments to extinguish the fire. Seashore Superintendent David Hallac stated: "We appreciate the professional support from our local volunteer fire departments in extinguishing the fire to reduce the risk to other areas of the Seashore and the surrounding community."

The cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation is underway. No additional details are available at this time. Wildfire Update: March 26, 2019
Preliminary results from the fire investigation indicate that the fire was not caused naturally and have ruled out the possibility that the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette. According to anonymous tips, just before the fire was observed, a sport utility vehicle was seen traveling north on Inside Road.
