On October 13, while strong rip currents were impacting the area, a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy were pulled into the ocean off a Cape Hatteras National Seashore beach in Waves, North Carolina. The 16-year-old was able to safely return to the beach and was taken to a hospital via ambulance. The National Park Service, Dare County Emergency Medical Services, and Dare County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the incident, and the United States Coast Guard and Chicamacomico Banks Water Rescue worked together in search efforts for the second boy over multiple operational periods. At 9:51 pm last evening, a visitor reported finding the body of the missing 17-year-old about 20 yards north of Avon Pier. Outer Banks Group Superintendent David Hallac said, "our thoughts are with his family and friends during this most difficult time." |
